Laser Printers - Advantages and Disadvantages

The laser printer is one of the most widespread devices used nowadays. This has practically replaced all printing devices which are available in the market because of its many advantages. Even though it is very often used in offices and homes, it hides some health risks which only a few people know. Advantages:
  • Easy to use: Even a child can operate it with lot of ease and get perfect results.
  • Compatibility: Most laser printers are plug and play devices and can self-configure with the PC irrespective of its operation system.
  • Several inexpensive models are available which makes these printers economical to buy and use.
  • Laser toners used in these printers give high quality print and in comparison to ink jet printers are very economical.
  • The print speed is much higher than ink jet and impact type printers which make it very popular with people and companies having high volume printing jobs.
Disadvantages:
  • Consumption of laser toner depends upon the quality of paper used for printing. Some papers carry more charge and draws excessive toner which results in uneconomical consumption.
  • This machine uses laser toners which have many different chemicals which are subjected to different processes like high and low voltages and high temperatures to get the results. This causes emission of certain gases like ozone, nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide that can affect human health.
  • UV radiations emitted by the laser device can adversely affect the user's eyesight without even knowing.
Usage tips: If you are using this kind of printer extensively then you should:
  • Place your printer in a separate room and connect your printer through a local area network this will reduce close proximity to the printer.
  • The printer room should be well ventilated and should remain unoccupied when large print jobs are undertaken.
Although the advantages that a laser printer has are way too many but one has to weigh the pros and cons and the long term advantages and disadvantages that it has. Only then you should decide what is beneficial for you.
